2025 HISC CREW RACE

Notice of Race and Sailing Instructions

The Dave Gottschall Memorial Crew Race

July 19

1. Rules: This race is governed by the 2025-2028 Racing Rules of Sailing except as modified by the HISC General Sailing Instructions and this Notice of Race.

2. Eligibility: This race is open to all HISC Members who have completed and signed the HILLSBORO INLET SAILING CLUB OFFICIAL ENTRY FORM for the 2025 racing season and have an assigned HISC Rating.

3. Fleets and Starting Times: There may be TWO classes for this race, JAM and ARC.

All fleets warning at 10:25, start at 10.30

4. The Race Committee may elect to postpone the start depending on conditions.

5. Engine use during racing:

a. Engines must be turned off at or prior to the preparatory signal and remain off for the duration of the race except as provided for in these instructions and the RRS. As per Rule 42.3(i) of the RRS a boat is allowed to use an engine or other propulsion method ONLY if said boat:

1. enters the marked beach swim area during prep or immediately after the start and

2. is unable to immediately exit the swim area under sail power alone

PROVIDED

3.use of the engine does not provide said boat with a significant racing advantage.

b. Boats making use of this provision must immediately contact the race committee who will in their sole judgement assess whether the use was allowable. Failure to contact the race committee or disallowed engine use will be subject to the yacht being scored DSQ.

6. Marks and courses:

• The starting line may be between an orange inflatable buoy and the Committee Boat.

OR

• The Start and finish may be an orange tetrahedron located north of the Hillsboro Inlet in 30’ of water, opposite the Beach Committee.

• If Short South mark is used, it may be the HI buoy.

• If Long course South mark is used, it is located

The South Mark is a virtual point located in the vicinity of the Commercial Blvd. pier, in about 145 ft of water, at or near the following coordinates:

If using degrees & minutes- N 26° 11.35’ – W 80° 4.00’

If using seconds - N 26° 11’ 21” – W 80° 4’ 00”

• If an East mark is used, it may be virtual, set near the following coordinates:

o If your GPS system uses degrees and minutes you will use: 26°16.09′ N / 80°2.68′ W

o If your GPS system uses degrees, minutes & seconds you will use:

26° 16′ 5.4″ N/ 80° 2′ 40.8″ W

• DO NOT sail west of the swim buoys. Maintain a distance of at least 300 feet from dive flags

• The racecourse will be announced by the Race Committee 15 minutes prior to the start of the race.

7. Beach Committee:

A) Will be located west of the Start mark and will display a large orange flutter flag on the beach. Flags and channel 68 will be used to signal starts.

b) All boats will be required to report to the Beach Committee on channel 68 prior to the start of the race. Be prepared to report your boat name and sail number.

c) Listen to the radio through the complete race. Shortened course or other important announcements may be made throughout the race.

d) When approaching the finish line, call the Beach Committee on channel 68 with your boat name and sail number.

8. Crew Race specifics:

• Boats that participate in the 'Crew Race' must be skipped by a member of the crew that is not the regular skipper, that person is referred to as the Designated Crew Skipper

• The regular skipper may command the boat to within 5 minutes of the class start.

• The regular skipper may be on board and may be part of the crew but should not be a decision maker except for those that affect the safety of the boat and crew.

• All racing tactics and commands should be made by the Designated Crew Skipper.

• For boats that are normally crewed by a crew of two, the regular skipper should hand the command to the regular crew member.

• The Designated Crew Skipper may also be a skipper from another HISC Club Member's boat or anyone whom the boat owner deems eligible to skipper the boat.

9. Awards:

Prizes will be awarded for the first three finishers based on corrected time. HISC/Modified PHRF Base rating will be used to determine corrected time. (Modified PHRF rating is the rating on the PHRF certification or rating given by HISC handicapper)

10. LOCATION: Home of Carol Joy

3409 Robbins Road, Pompano Beach. You can anchor in the basin, dingy ashore and walk to the house.

5:30-7:30

Please bring a dish to share and BYOB.
