Spring 2026 Youth Sailing
On Saturday, March 7th we launched our Spring Session of Youth Sailing. Regretfully, it is a small class of only 6 students. Four returning club members, who enjoy racing around in the Open Bic's and two intrepid beginners in our Pram fleet.
Mitch Kimball, took on the role of Pram Instructor and carefully encouraged our young students thru their first solo voyage. Winds were 13mph ESE, which makes it very difficult for a beginner to return to the beach. After several missed attempts, we sent Mike to assist them in a coach boat. Still no luck, the heavy weeds near shore proved too much for the coach boats electric motor. Then Jeff went to help in the other coach boat, and again the weeds. We finally heaved a line from shore to drag them all in. Exhausting for the adults, but the kids were giggling about their adventures.
We are grateful to new club member, Mitch Kimball for stepping up to instruct. While new to our club, he is a certified instructor and glad to step forward, while Jim Wallace is out.
Jeff Zirulnick has assisted the youth sailing program for many years. We are also grateful that he could step up since Josh Dorval was also absent for our first day.
It could have been a crisis; both our usual instructors not able to attend opening day. But somehow, it always works out. We have a great group of volunteers!
This year, Quiet Waters Park required HISC to hire a lifeguard to monitor our sailing lessons. After I made an appeal to the club at a general meeting, Astrid put me in touch with Tyler Setzer. Tyler attended the Change of Command raft up on his dad's catarmaran, Serendipity. So, again, it worked out.
