Youth Sailing Spring Tidbits
The Spring session of Youth Sailing has ended with several tidbits of news that are worth sharing.
Thanks to David Burdett and Terry Usher we have repurposed the sunfish trailer as our new O'pen Skiff trailer. The previous O'pen Skiff trailer became the new Optimist Pram trailer. And the previous pram trailer, which was a decades old, enormous, rusty steel flatbed with a rusty steel rack, has been retired. We now have three aluminum trailers with PVC racks for our prams, skiffs, and instructor boats. These should last us for a long time. Also on the trailer subject the multitalented Paul Alcock has built us canvas covers for the three trailers which will help keep the boats clean and out of the sun while in storage between sessions. Thus extending the life of our latest fleet of boats. While the trailers were waiting for completion in the parking lot at Quiet Waters they were hit with some heavy rains which blew one of the trailers 20 feet into the parking lot.
We have acquired one more molded pram and we should receive our final one before the fall session. This will finish the pram fleet out at seven and the skiff fleet is already finalized at eight. Our instructors are really enjoying the fleet and are getting great results with the kids. Mike Megarity's coaching of Boris Shemigon's daughter to stop sculling the rudder finally took hold. She won the "Jim Wallace Cup". It was a proud moment for both father and daughter.
We will be holding registration for club members for the Fall session sometime in August. Standby for an official date. It will be in conjunction with the designated club meeting for August.
Jamie and I are very proud of the how far we've come with the program. We feel it is now running on all cylinders and we have developed a routine for running it. Next year will be our final year as chairs for the program since I will commodore after that. (We took over the program in Dec of 2019). We are looking for someone to take over as chair. We will still be involved and readily available to assist.
Cheers, BARRY SIMMONS
