Don't Miss the Boat!
Get your kids into the HISC Youth Sailing Program for 2025.
We are sailors. Its our job to share this knowledge with the next generation.
While working as a team is a critical component of sailing, sailing lessons crafted for children present opportunities for solo sailing. As with any new skill, getting it right may take some time. There will be a learning curve as new skills are layered on. But as these skills grow, your children will learn to sail and steer their own boat. Metaphorically this is huge and once again, confidence is at the core. The realization that through trial and error and with supported coaching you can learn something completely new builds a foundation of self-reliance.
If your child sticks with sailing, they will eventually be on a larger boat with others and they will rotate roles. The captain provides direction and the crew understands and executes their respective jobs of putting up the sails, tacking, jibing, and maneuvering. Learning how to effectively communicate as a leader and how to be a good team member are residual lessons learned on the water that can’t be overstated.
Try Big Boats
As a youth sailor, it’s likely that dinghies are your main thing. But you aren’t a complete sailor unless you know your way around a big boat. Simple skills like loading a winch, securing dock lines, setting an anchor, or reefing a sail can open doors to bigger opportunities in big boat racing and coastal and offshore sailing. Learn these skills now, and you may find yourself sailing a distance race or across an ocean one day.
HISC's former youth sailor, Naya Mondrosch sailed on Third Tri in the 2024 Ladies Day race and won!

To learn more about the HISC Youth Program please attend the next general meeting, January 9, 2025. We will conduct a short slide show presentation, answer your questions, and gladly assist with registrations. This program is free for children of club members, however, it is still a great value at $200 per child. So, please recommend to your neighbors and friends, and invite them to attend this meeting as your guest.
